Siemens signs historic research agreement with QUT and DST Group

A new partnership between the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Siemens and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) will progress research into the use of high temperature superconductor (HTS) technologies in Australia.

In particular, the organisations will be looking at the applications of HTS to maritime defence and industrial power requirements to find a technology that can be taken through to a trial phase.

The intended ultimate outcome of the research will be more energy-efficient ships, more effective capacity utilisation, cost reductions and environmental benefits.

QUT will draw on its expertise and facilities to conduct the project, including the Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct, a specialist research centre for structural, mechanical and electrical engineering.

Siemens is investing 15 years’ worth of HTS knowledge into Australia to develop expertise in the field and has made an initial investment of around $2 million in equipment and resources and $500,000 in research and development hours. This investment is expected to increase as the project progresses.
