New military capability to be demonstrated off North Queensland coast

A joint army and navy task force will be conducting air and sea training operations off the North Queensland coast during September and October.

The Amphibious Ready Element - Australia's newest military capability - brings together Townsville-based defence force personnel, crew from the HMAS Canberra, MRH-90 helicopters and landing craft.

These 'Sea Series' exercises aim to teach participants how to operate as an amphibious joint task force, which will help enhance the defence and strategic interests of Australia and our ability to provide humanitarian aid during disaster response.

Training operations will operate mainly inside the Great Barrier Reef, including Cowley Beach - south of Innisfail - and Mourilyan Harbour areas, with helicopters flying as far inland as Atherton.

The location was considered ideal, given nearby Townsville's 2nd Battalion is the major land force involved in the military simulations.
