Defence Industrial Capabilities Assessment Industry Survey closing soon

The Department of Defence (Defence) has launched a first-of-its-kind industry survey to assess defence industrial capabilities. You can have your say by responding to the survey by Mon 6 February 2017. Earlier submissions are welcomed.

Defence is working in collaboration with the Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) to undertake this assessment, which forms part of a much broader initiative to produce the Defence Industry Capability Plan (DICP). It is expected that the DICP will guide Defence investment over the next 10 years and identify a number of sovereign industrial capabilities for additional Government support.

Defence is interested in all capabilities with a potential military application, across all tiers in the supply chain, including academia and research organisations. The survey is not focused solely on traditional Defence suppliers. It considers all products and services purchased by Defence and national security clients—from professional services through to infrastructure, ICT and garrison support.

To ensure your organisation's capabilities are considered in this analysis and future validation activities, you are encouraged to complete the survey.

Next steps:

• Access and complete the survey. It should take approximately 10 minutes, depending on the number of Defence Relevant Industrial Capabilities (DRICs) you select.
• Select those DRICs which best represent what you do and answer the questions to the best of your ability. If the level of specificity of a DRIC is not sufficient, or a suitable DRIC is missing, please utilise the free text line to add your own and complete the questions in relation to the capability.
• Forward the survey link to organisations within your supply chain and anyone in your network who may also be a supplier to Defence, or has the capabilities to supply to Defence. Defence wants to be able to capture what they are capable of also.

How your participation will benefit your organisation and other Defence Industry organisations

This is the first time a study of this size and nature has been attempted in Australia and, potentially, the world. The framework might not be perfect yet, but is only the beginning—iteration number one. The greater the participation this first time around, the better the data analysis will be, and the greater the opportunity to continue strengthening the DRICs analysis framework.

Defence anticipates being able to share with industry some of the outputs of this activity, potentially in the form of a heat map indicating identifiable supply vs demand across the major defence industrial capabilities, serving as a measure of capability health and competition.

Other important points to note:

• Your response can include up to 10 DRICs.
• The covering page of the survey includes a link to access the full list of DRICs to assist you to complete the survey. You can print this out to help navigate through the survey, or have it open in a separate window. This document also includes a high level case study, to assist you to understand the intent of the survey.
• The DRICs structure is based on the Australian New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) code framework, modified to better suit Defence capability requirements. The modified structure will not impact or replace the ANZSIC framework. You do not have to select the ANZSIC code which is reported to the ABS as your primary industrial classification if this does not accurately reflect your capabilities.

• All responses are confidential and will be reported in a de-identified and aggregated form to state and territory governments for statistical purposes. Your ABN and company name will not be included in the dataset.
