Advance Queensland Program launches remotely piloted aircraft research

The Queensland Government's Advance Queensland Platform Technology Program has awarded $1 million to the Boeing Company to develop and test Remotely Piloted Aircraft systems (RPAS) technologies in Queensland.

This research project—the first to be funded under the $10 million Platform Technology Program—aims to develop an airspace awareness surveillance system, capitalising on existing RPAS technologies capabilities to conduct remote-monitoring and inspection of key industrial infrastructure.

The surveillance system's development as a platform technology, may also go on to provide benefits for other industries such as mining, energy, agriculture and the environment.

The project represents a first-of-its-kind partnership between Boeing and the Queensland Government which will also call on industry and technical expertise from:

  • Insitu Pacific (a Boeing subsidiary)
  • Shell's QGC project
  • Telstra
  • Queensland Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The project is expected to generate up to 100 aerospace jobs in the next five years. Up to 50% of jobs created are likely to be with Queensland SMEs.

The Advance Queensland Platform Technology Program is part of the state government's $405 million Advance Queensland initiative, which is working to create jobs for the future.
