Queensland PhD student nominated for national aviation award

Queensland PhD student Vanessa Lussini

PhD student Vanessa Lussini from the Queensland University of Technology has been shortlisted for the 2015 Aerospace Australia Ltd Industry Innovation Awards for her project that looks to improve the safety of aircraft and reduce maintenance costs.

Ms Lussini's project is being conducted under a scholarship from the Defence Materials Technology Centre (DMTC) and specifically looks at using organic compounds to develop sensors that will alert maintenance crews when sections of an aircraft need repainting before mechanical strain, direct sunlight, varying temperatures, water, salt and other pressures cause dangerous corrosion resulting in potentially catastrophic failure.
